People departing Japan will have to pay 1,000 yen departure tax from Monday

Starting Monday,... travelers leaving Japan will be required to pay a departure tax of one-thousand yen,... that's around nine U.S. dollars.
It's the first new tax in Japan in 27 years since the land value tax was introduced in the early 1990s.
The departure tax will apply to everyone except infants under two years old,... when leaving Japan by air or sea.
The tax will be added automatically to airline or sea fares.
The Japanese government says the revenue from the new tax will be used to improve facilities for overseas travelers and enhance tourist attractions.
