'Time' Magazine's 2018 Person of the Year: Slain and Imprisoned Journalists Time refers to the group of
journalists targeted for
their work as, "The Guardians." The magazine released a
series of four black and
white covers, focusing
on "the War on Truth." Included in the group is slain
Saudi journalist, Jamal Khashoggi. Kashoggi is the first person
who is deceased to be named
a Person of the Year by Time. The CIA has concluded that
Khashoggi's murder was
ordered by the Saudi Crown Prince. Also included in "The Guardians"
are Reuters journalists
Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo. The two remain
imprisoned in Myanmar. The slain journalists from
The Capital Gazette in
Annapolis, MD, were also
named among "The Guardians." Maria Ressa is the
subject of the
fourth Time cover. CEO of the Philippine news
website Rappler, Ressa was
indicted last month
on tax evasion charges. Civil liberties groups
have referred to her
indictment as a Philippine
crackdown on dissent. Ed Felsenthal, 'Time' editor, via CNN
