Chris travels to Sydney for her heart operation. Her friends in Coopers Crossing say goodbye as she leaves for what they think is a minor operation. In hospital Chris meets Jamie, a young boy who is convinced he will die. Although Chris' operation is deemed a success, her father warns that it will be some time before they can be confident of a positive prognosis. When Jamie dies, Chris is forced to confront her own mortality. Paula organises a bunyip race in aid of the RFDS.
