'Hangeul Family Festival' held at National Hangeul Museum

Today people all across the nation are celebrating the birth of the Korean alphabet hangul.
One standout event is the Hangeul Family Festival hosted by the National Hangeul Museum.
Our Choi Si-young takes us there.
"Here at the National Hangeul Museum, visitors are celebrating Hangeul Day by taking part in the event such as woodblock printing at this family festival."

The woodblock printing with traditional Korean paper or laminated sheets fascinated visitors... who took home their own printed piece.
They also learned how Hangeul was invented.

"Seeing how the Korean language is created and how much work it took, like the science of it with using your throat and the shape of your mouth, is really interesting."

Professional Hangeul calligraphers gave each visitor a piece of handwritten Hangeul calligraphy as a souvenir.

The museum also showed how the Korean language has evolved over time.

"The Hangeul Family Festival means all those reading and writing the Korean language are one family. We prepared for activities for every family to enjoy."

The festival finale was an interactive performance of the King Sejong era.
Actors showed how people lived under King Sejong,... and how civil servants took a nationwide merit test before serving the public. The performance gave the audience a glimpse into what it was like during the time when Hangeul was created.
