National Guard soldiers built a barrier around the fresh water pumping station on Pawley’s Island, South Carolina, on September 24, ahead of extensive flooding expected this week in the aftermath of Hurricane Florence.Pawley’s Island is located on the coast, with marsh and the rapidly flooding Waccamaw River on the other side. The river is expected to crest at 22 feet on Wednesday upriver at Conway. Near Bucksport, downriver from Conway, the river was nearing 26 feet on Tuesday, the National Weather Service said. At Pawley’s Island, where tidal flows affect the Waccamaw’s depth, the river was just under flood stage on Monday. Credit: South Carolina National Guard via Storyful
