Mount Etna in Sicily, Italy, erupted on August 27, marking new seismic activity for what is the largest volcano in Europe.

According to media, the volcano sent large blocks of flaming lava hundreds of feet in to the air. The National Institute of Geophysics and Vulcanology (IGNV) in Italy recorded an intense escalation in volcanic eruptions over the weekend.

This video shows the explosions from the southeast crater.

Mount Etna was first recorded erupting in 1500 BC, and since then it has erupted around 200 times, with a burst of activity in recent decades.
