Hurricane Lane brought torrential rain and severe flash floods to Hilo, Hawaii, as the storm moved closer to Big Island on August 23.

This video, shared by Jaykob Cheney, shows a flash flood raging through a culvert in Hilo.

Hurricane Lane, forecast to make landfall in the state, lashed the Big Island with nearly 20 inches of rain in 24 hours. Shelters were opened up on Big Island and in Maui, Molokai and Lanai to house evacuated residents.

The hurricane was downgraded to a Category 3 storm later in the day.
