Astronauts Played First-Ever Tennis Match in Space On Aug. 21, astronauts played space tennis. The match included NASA astronauts Drew Feustel, Ricky Arnold, Serena Auñón-Chancellor and European Space Agency astronaut Alexander Gerst. Feustel had been wanting to do this for quite some time. Drew Feustel, commander of expedition 56, at NASA briefing The United States Tennis Association began working on this idea with Feustel back in December 2017. Their hope was to inspire young tennis players to take an interest in space. The match was projected on the Unisphere in Queens, New York, which is where the U.S. Open is being held from Aug. 21 to Sep. 9. The space-match was also streamed live online on the U.S. Open's Facebook, Twitter and YouTube channels. Aside from this being history in the making, it's also a great way for the astronauts to get in some of the 2 hours of exercise that they need per day to prevent their muscles and bones from deteriorating.
