First Basic Income Trial in US Hitting California 100 residents in Stockton, California will be receiving $500 a month with
zero restrictions. The additional income is part of a universal basic income trial taking place in the town. This will be the first major trial for such a program within
the U.S. The pilot will kick off an 18-month trial come February 2019. Residents of Stockton are eligible if they are at least 18 years old and have a median income of $46,033 or less. Anyone who earns more can still be eligible as long as their neighborhood fits
the criteria. Researchers will check in regularly with participants so see how it affects health, financial security and civic engagement. Finland has a similar two-year pilot giving 2,000 people basic universal basic income of $600 a month. The people in the program received $600 a month.
