You know Will Smith as the charismatic actor who rose to fame with flicks like “Men in Black,” and the iconic sitcom “Fresh Prince of Bel Air.” But how did he get to where he is today?

Willard “Will” Smith Jr. started rapping at a young age, and happened to hit it off with DJ Jazzy Jeff at a block party in 1986. In 1988, their song “Parents Just Don’t Understand” became the first hip-hop song to win a Grammy — but they ended up boycotting the awards because the awards show refused to televise the category.

He later met Benny Medina on the Arsenio Hall show, who pitched him the idea for “Fresh Prince.” After a whirlwind audition process, Will was cast as the show’s lead and it aired ten weeks later.

He and DJ Jazzy Jeff released two more albums before Smith went solo and released hits such as “Getting Jiggy With It,” and “Just the Two of Us.” He also became a familiar face on the big screen with films like “Ali,” and “Men in Black.”

He has made plenty of hit appearances since then with movies like “iRobot,” and “I am Legend.” His entire family, including daughter Willow and son Jayden, have become household names too.
