I use this with my early elementary students to reinforce the concept of addition (Lyrics Below) Dont forget to count along with dog Addition as she gains more and more weight!\r \r See more of my math poems on:\r \r \r \r LYRICS:\r Well I got a new dog,\r And I named her addition,\r She loves to eat food,\r So she lives in the kitchen\r She takes all the food,\r From each closet and drawer,\r She eats all that food,\r But she always wants more!\r My parents were angry,\r And my brother was too,\r She ate up his homework,\r And then ate up his shoe!\r Each day Addition,\r Well, shes adding more weight,\r She thinks every new thing,\r Truly tastes great.\r \r CHORUS\r My doggie named addition,\r She really likes to add,\r Finding sums of different numbers.\r Really makes her glad! \r She doesnt bark or bite,\r She stays up every night,\r Adding numbers finding sums,\r Makes her feel alright!\r \r She ate sisters breakfast,\r She ate mommas chair,\r She ate brothers baseball,\r And she ate daddys hair!\r She started at 4 pounds,\r But added 2 more,\r The sum of her dog pounds?\r Was greater than 4!\r She added 2 pounds,\r To her 4 pounds that day,\r How many dog pounds,\r Did addition now weigh?\r \r 6 pounds is small!\r She screamed with dismay,\r So she added 3 pounds,\r To her weight the next day,\r What had she eaten,To gain those 3 pounds?A tree and a yo-yo, \r A toy train that made sounds!\r Now Addition was big,\r But not as heavy as me,\r How many pounds \r Is 6 pounds plus 3?\r \r I yelled 9s quite enough!\r Addings making you bigger,\r Much more doggy weight gain,\r And youll ruin your figure!\r But she added again, \r She was growing galore! \r She got stuck in the door,\r Shed added ten more!\r What had she eaten,\r To gain those 10 pounds? \r She ate my pajamas, \r And my mothers nightgowns!\r Now heres a big challenge, \r Lets count them again,\r Whats the big sum,\r Of a 9 and a 10?\r \r 19 dog pounds,\r She looked like a hog,\r Couldnt walk, or go swimming, \r Or chase balls, or jog!!\r Addition kept adding, \r And putting on pounds,\r Until her stomach did gurgle,\r With groaning-type sounds!!!\r Now Additions so big,\r Its just a sad f,\r Ill need dog, Addition,\r To learn to subtr. \r Subtrion makes things,\r Smaller they say,\r Instead of adding more on,\r It takes things away!
