Columbus Square and Statue - Tourist Attraction, Madrid Spain

According to information available, the Monument to Cristopher Columbus at the Plaza de Colón ("Columbus Square") in Madrid (Spain) was designed by Arturo Mélida (1849–1902). It was built from 1881 to 1885. The square base with reliefs and octagonal pillar were sculpted in stone by Mélida. The Columbus statue (three metres high) was sculpted in Italian white marble by Jerónimo Suñol (1839–1902). Recommended to visit.
