The recent storm that was experienced in the area unearthed the hidden World War I era tracks from their slumber. There is approximately 1.5 miles of track hidden under the beach sand.
The tracks date back to either 1905 or 1915 (depending on who you ask). The rail line was originally used to transported munitions, cannons and shells to the beach as part of an artillery testing ground run by Bethlehem Steel.
In the early 1900s the tracks used to carry sand from the Cape May Sand Company plant, which once was located on the site where Sunset and Higbee beaches meet. The Cape May Sand Company mined the fine quartz sand along the shoreline and shipped it for use in glass making or building projects.
The company stopped from shipping sand off the beach in 1936, due to concerns of the depletion of sand on nearby bathing beaches. When the Cape May Sand Company vacated, the Harbison-Walker Magnesite Plant took it over.
About 100 feet of the tracks were left exposed this time in 2018. The tracks are located in between Sunset Beach and Higbee Beach.
In recent times the tracks resurfaced back in 2014, prior to that, it has been covered for about 80 years.
