If I already have a c-section scar, will I have a second scar with a tummy tuck procedure?

Sometimes, patients ask if a tummy tuck scar would result in the same degree as a C-section scar. The answer is: it depends. For the most part, most surgeons will prefer to place the tummy tuck scar right where the C-section scar is, but sometimes the C-section scar might be placed way too low, making it impossible to place it at that level and extend it to the side. When I perform a tummy tuck, I certainly prefer to place the tummy tuck scar right at the C-section site, but this all depends on how much excess skin you have and the distance between the belly button and the suprapubic area, because sometimes patients do not have enough skin above the tummy to make sure that the closure of the belly will be without any tension. In other words, if you have a lot of skin above the belly button, placement of the scar right where C-section scar is will be recommended, but if your skin is very tight and you do not have a lot of skin above the belly button, then you might need to have a tummy tuck scar slightly higher than your C-section scar. In general, most patients can have the tummy tuck scar located at the C-section site, but understand that every patient is different. Discuss with your surgeon if in fact you are going to have one scar in the same place as your C-section scar, or an additional scar over the C-section scar after surgery.
