Children and parents will not notice any difference in the quality or appearance of the new elements, because plant-based polyethylene has the same properties as conventional polyethylene LEGO is using the sugarcane, which they are buying from Brazil, to produce polyethylene, a softer type of plastic. According to Brooks, any LEGO box you buy will have sugarcane-sourced LEGO "botanicals" by the end of 2018. The toy maker hopes to manufacture most of its core products from more sustainable sources, like plants, by 2030.
