NEW YORK CITY— Scientists have discovered a new group of antibiotics in soil, according to research published in the journal Nature Microbiology.

Researchers examined some 2,000 soil samples from across the U.S., Nature reported. The new group of antibiotics are called malacidins.

The team applied the new antibiotics to rats infected with MRSA and found it annihilated the infection, the BBC reported.

Lead researcher Sean Brady told the BBC it's impossible to tell when or if the discovery would make it to clinics.
