Kumaoni weddings are refreshingly simple and there is no garish display of wealth. A typical Kumaoni wedding is preceeded by various other small ceremonies. The first of these varied ceremonies of a Kumaoni wedding is the ‘Haldi’ ceremony. This ceremony is very much similar to the Haldi ceremony found in the other regions of India. The Haldi ceremony is generally held a day before the wedding in bride’s and groom’s house. It a very important and joyous ritual. During this ceremony female members of the family sing and dance as family and friends apply turmeric or haldi paste, on the face, arms and the legs of the Groom.
It is necessary for married women to wear ‘Rangwali Pichaura’ during all the ceremonies. The Rangwali pichaura is a kind of a stole with a rich saffron background and designs made with red dots.

Aloo Poori or potatoes and a deep-fried bread are the main components of this lunch.
After the lunch all the female members of groom’s family gather for the ‘Suwal Pathai’. Suwal pathai is a kumaoni wedding ritual in which wheat flour is kneaded into a dough, rolled-out and dried in the sun after dipping in dry flour. Once dry, these are fried in oil and are exchanged along with sweets on the day of the wedding.
