Injured Treated in Chala After Deadly Earthquake Shakes Southern Peru

At least two people were killed and scores were injured following what the US Geological Survey said was a 7.1-magnitude earthquake in Peru on Sunday, January 14. The region of Arequipa was reported to be the worst affected area.Peru’s President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski tweeted that he was traveling to the Arequipa towns Acarí and Chala to examine the extent of the damage and coordinate humanitarian aid.EsSalud, the Social Health Insurance of Peru, said 29 people had been treated at the Maria Reiche de Marcona Hospital, and that a temporary medical post would be set up in Arequipa.Chala TV streamed live video to Facebook from a medical post in the town where people with injuries were treated, as well as streaming other footage from the Chala area.The governor of Arequipa, Yamila Osorio, tweeted that a man had died in the town of Yauca after being hit by a rock.A second person died in the town of Bella Union after a building collapsed, according to Chilean media reports.Power outages were reported in several areas.
