Crew members on board the Key West-based Coast Guard Cutter Thetis recently rescued a giant sea turtle that had gotten tangled up in a stash of "suspected contraband."
The sea creature was discovered by personnel who had taken a smaller craft to investigate debris in the Eastern Pacific waters.
They found the turtle hopelessly wrapped up in lines and noticed heavy chafing on its flippers and neck.
After cutting the animal free, they gathered up roughly 75 feet of line in an effort to prevent future incidents.
The team went on to recover about 1,800 pounds of cocaine estimated to be worth roughly $58 million.
