Female Rohingya Refugees Tell of Rape, Torture and Abuse

UNICEF reported on November 21 that it had documented cases of rape, torture and abuse among the 621,000 Rohingya refugees who have fled Myanmar for Bangladesh since August.Medecins Sans Frontieres said on the same date that it had treated 88 women and girls who had suffered sexual violence. Half of those treated were under the age of 18, including several under the age of 10, MSF said.Pramila Patten, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, said during a visit to refugee camps at Cox’s Bazaar, Bangladesh, on November 12: “Sexual violence is being commanded, orchestrated and perpetrated by the Armed Forces of Myanmar, otherwise known as the Tatmadaw.”This video shows a 16-year-old Rohingya refugee who said she was raped by soldiers. “I was hiding where we keep the goats and the military found me there," she says, according to a translation.
