Talking about the social structure of the UK and what it feels like to like within that. Working class, middle class, upper middle class, the aristocracy. BTW - we say bloody to mean something we dislike - its a very soft swear word.\r
\r
The British are obsessed with the class system. It is very important to have some sort of idea about the British class system because it takes such an important place in the conversations we have and the way the British look and think about the world. If you think about any British film, there is a good chance that class will be one of the major ideas of the film. In this video, I will take some time to express some of my opinions and reflections on the British class system.\r
\r
The class system in Britain can be broken down into the following categories;\r
\r
The working class- around 50% of the population is working class. This is the poorer end of society. The stereotypical jobs that the working class have are skilled and unskilled labour, construction, carpentry, plumbing, stone-masonry, service industry, catering, kitchen work, administration, and driving work. The traditional working class are often home owners with small businesses. This is a massive over-simplification but is, on the whole, true.\r
\r
The middle class- This is the middle section of society that is relatively well-off or comfortable and lives very well (or at least used to before the recession in Europe). The middle class makes up about 35-40% of the population. The type of work you can expect from the middle classes are that of service industry work, media, entertainment, the arts, marketing, PR, managerial positions and small business owners. Members of the middle class tend to be homeowners. \r
\r
The upper middle class- This section of society lives very well. The jobs included for this section of society are doctors, private doctors, lawyers, mid level bankers, managers. The hallmark of the upper-middle class is the intention of rising up to becoming upper class and the ambition for more money and influence.\r
\r
The Aristocracy- This incredibly small section of society wields a disproportionate amount of influence and power. They are born with money, prestige, land and power. Many of them will become politicians and then later businessmen. Many of them will never get jobs in their lives, being rich enough to live off their own inherited wealth.\r
