You will learn about Osmosis in this video. The movement of water molecules through a selectively permeable membrane from a region of high water concentration to low water concentration is called osmosis.\r
\r
Let us understand this by taking some raisins in a bowl of water. After some time, the raisins will swell, indicating that they have absorbed water. Here, there was low water concentration inside the raisins because of which the raisins absorbed water and they swelled. Such a solution where there is higher water concentration outside the cell is called a hypotonic solution.\r
\r
Now, let us place these raisins in sugar syrup. After some time, the raisins shrink as there is higher water concentration inside the raisins as compared to the sugar syrup. Therefore, water passes out from the raisins to the sugar syrup. Such a solution where there is lower water concentration outside the cell is called a hypertonic solution.\r
