VetsOnCall – I became a vet because I love horses

I like being around the horses, and I get to do that all day, says Dr. Deb Spike-Pierce in this Vets On Call story in central Kentucky, the Horse Capital of the World. As the story opens, shes traveling to an appointment to modify the cast of a thoroughbred racehorse recovering from surgery after a bone frure. The cast is rubbing against the horses leg and causing a sore, so she tranquilizes him, then re-sets the cast so the horse can stand and walk more comfortably. She explains hell likely be able to race again in 90 days. \r

As she drives to her next appointment, she explains that with todays advances in surgery, Lots of horses go back to racing after a bone frure. With some we cant repair the frure to make them an athlete, but after surgery they go onto a second career as a breeding animal.\r
\r
She adds that horses need proper medical care like people do. If a horse has a fever or lacerates himself on a stick in the field, you need to call your vet.\r
\r
Thats whats so great about being an equine veterinarian, being with the horses every day, theyre just a magnificent animal.\r
