President Hassan Rouhani of Iran on Monday cautioned the U.S. against abandoning its nuclear agreement with the nation.

President Hassan Rouhani of Iran on Monday cautioned the U.S. against abandoning its nuclear agreement, called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, with the nation.

“Exiting such an agreement would carry a high cost for the United States of America, and I do not believe Americans would be willing to pay such a high cost for something that will be useless for them," Rouhani said during an interview with CNN.
The leader further commented that such a move, “will yield no results for the United States but at the same time it will generally decrease and cut away and chip away at international trust placed in the Unites States of America."
“[President] Trump has signalled his intention to withdraw certification of the Iran deal in a report the state department is due to submit to Congress by 15 October," The Guardian notes. "Although that would not lead directly to the end of the agreement, it would open the door to new US sanctions which would represent a violation of the deal and trigger its unravelling.”
That route has reportedly faced opposition from members of Trump’s cabinet, including Secretary of Defense James Mattis, and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, and leaders of other nations.
“France's top diplomat…said French President Emmanuel Macron will try to persuade President Trump to remain a party to the international nuclear deal with Iran when the two leaders meet later Monday,” reports the Washington Post.
The nuclear agreement was struck in 2015 and involves a number of Western powers and China. It offers an alleviation of sanctions against Iran in exchange for the country scaling back on its nuclear program.
