Before New Years in Japan its traditional to make mochi and then display it in your genkan (玄関/the entryway of your house). The mochi you display is called Kagami mochi (鏡餅/mirror mochi), and consists of 2-3 layers of round mochi cakes stacked on top of each other. The traditional method of making mochi is pounding mochi rice with a giant wooden mallet. However, the days of technology are upon us and now the modern method of making mochi is using a rice cooker! Every year different shrines will still make mochi the traditional way for certain festivals and the New Year, so if you visit Japan look out for it!\r

When I visited Japan, Jun and I went to his uncles house to eat some freshly-made mochi (出来立て持ち/dekitate mochi). The footage at the end of the video is from the Hadaka Matsuri (裸祭り/Naked Festival) two years ago--which Juns uncle was involved in planning!\r
