Cross-border sweet talk could save NAFTA.

Government officials and trade groups in Canada and Mexico hope US governors and mayors can thwart President Trump’s vow to unravel the free-trade pact.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told the National Governors Association meeting in Rhode Island on Friday that “NAFTA isn’t perfect” — but should be “updated and modernized” — not tossed.

Mexico City Mayor Miguel Ángel Mancera also attended the meeting.

The US, Canada and Mexico will begin renegotiating the pact in August.
