Rush Limbaugh has called Stephen Hawking’s recent warning about the dangers of climate change “meteorological porn.”
Limbaugh made the comment on his radio show Wednesday, telling his listeners that the renowned physicist “blasted [President] Trump's recent decision to pull the United States out of the Paris climate change agreement in a new interview, saying it could push Earth over the brink.”
The conservative host continued by quoting Hawking as saying, “We are close to the tipping point where global warming becomes irreversible. Trump’s action could push the Earth over the brink, to become like Venus, with a temperature of 250 degrees, and raining sulphuric acid.”
Limbaugh, who has denied climate change based on religious principles, then said, “Folks, that is meteorological porn.”
And while he acknowledged that Hawking is generally considered one of the smartest people in the world, Limbaugh called the physicist’s climate change remarks “insanity” and went on to dismiss the scientist’s previous comments about colonizing Mars or the moon.
The radio host was reacting to an interview Hawking recently had with the BBC where he said, “Climate change is one of the great dangers we face, and it's one we can prevent if we act now.”
He added, “By denying the evidence for climate change, and pulling out of the Paris Climate Agreement, Donald Trump will cause avoidable environmental damage to our beautiful planet, endangering the natural world, for us and our children.”
Trump, on the other hand, has expressed skepticism about climate change, at times calling it a "hoax."
During his speech pulling the U.S. from the Paris accord on June 1, the president cited high financial burdens, the loss of millions of jobs, and damage to sectors like coal and natural gas as his reasons for the decision.
