Connectivity to the outside world is no longer an optional luxury, it is quickly becoming a human necessity. Many areas of the world remain unconnected because building the necessary infrastructure would not profitable.
New thinking is needed on how we build mobile infrastructure.
OpenBTS is an open source software suite which turns a commodity computer and radio into a functional mobile network.
Handsets connected to OpenBTS can reach existing telephony networks via the Internet. This allows them to exchange calls and sms with any other mobile phone on the globe.
This video demonstrates RangeSDMN, a commercial product from Range Networks the creators of OpenBTS. However, integrators can use the freely available OpenBTS components to create solutions for their own communities.
OpenBTS connects handsets in a completely new way, eliminating the need for the most expensive pieces of infrastructure.
Please take a second to share this video and help spread the word. Over a billion people remain unconnected. The technology is available but spectrum access policies still greatly favor large corporations. The people need increased public access to radio spectrum.
