One of President Trump’s lawyers has denied that he is under investigation.
On NBC’s 'Meet the Press' Sunday, Jay Sekulow said, “There is not an investigation of the President of the United States. Period.”
His remarks come just two days after Trump seemed to acknowledge that he was at the center of an inquiry when he tweeted, “I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director! Witch Hunt.”
The tweet appeared to be in response to an earlier Washington Post report which stated, “The special counsel overseeing the investigation into Russia’s role in the 2016 election is interviewing senior intelligence officials as part of a widening probe that now includes an examination of whether President Trump attempted to obstruct justice, officials said.”
The piece also noted that while the FBI had reportedly not been focusing on Trump personally, “Officials say that changed shortly after [former Director] Comey’s firing.”
Sekulow tried to explain the president’s Tweet by saying, “Every day, the Washington Post and The New York Times are utilizing supposed leaked information about supposed investigations of the President of the United States. So his legal team and the president responds.”
After host Chuck Todd asked why Trump appears to be afraid of an investigation, Sekulow said, “He’s not afraid of the investigation; there is no investigation. I want to be clear here.”
