US Senator John McCain was in Canberra on Monday, May 29, to discuss Asia-Pacific security and appeared as a guest during a sitting of federal parliament.Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull praised McCain as “one of the strongest voices for the Australian United States alliance.”“Senator McCain, you are among friends. You are a great friend of Australia. Welcome to our house of democracy here in Canberra,” Turnbull said. “Mr Speaker, Senator McCain has lead a life of leadership, of public service, and of selfless courage. As a prisoner of war for five-and-a-half years, he selflessly, despite torture and cruelty, refused to be transferred back to the US in advance of his colleagues.”According to the SBS, Opposition leader Bill Shorten said he could not “promise that your visit will guarantee better behaviour during question time, but I certainly believe that our Parliament is better for your presence.”
