Rep. Steve King, a Republican from Iowa, has a reputation for making comments that appear to lean towards white nationalism, notes the New York Times.
Over the weekend, one such remark drew a great amount of attention.
In support of Geert Wilders, a Dutch politician seeking to end Muslim immigration, King, on Sunday, tweeted, “Wilders understands that culture and demographics are our destiny. We can't restore our civilization with somebody else's babies.”
Florida Republican Carlos Curbelo tweeted back, “What exactly do you mean? Do I qualify as ‘somebody else's baby?’”
Ted Lieu, a California Democrat with Taiwanese roots, shared a photo of his children and wrote, “Dear Representative Steve King: These are my two babies...”
Not all who responded opposed King’s message.
Former KKK leader David Duke gushed, “God bless Steve King.”
On Monday morning, King appeared on CNN’s  ‘New Day’ and, when asked to clarify his Twitter post, said, “I meant exactly what I said…You've got to keep your birth rate up…you need to teach your children your values. In doing so, you can grow your population, you can strengthen your culture, and you can strengthen your way of life."
