CBS News reports that 18-year-old Oliver Funes Machada sounded calm during the phone call which “began with the suspect saying he killed someone and the dispatcher asking him why.”
The teen answered, “Because I felt like it.”
The suspect also admitted to stabbing the woman “like eight times” because he was angry at her and that the knife he used was, in his words, “in her mouth.”
And when the dispatcher asked about the two young children--his 4-year-old sister and 2-year-old brother--who could be heard crying, he said, “I’m not going to kill them; don’t worry.”
According to WNCN, when deputies with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office responded to the family home on Monday, they found the suspect standing outside holding a butcher knife and the head of his mother, identified as 35-year-old Yesenia Funes Beatriz Machada.
Once officers entered the home, they found the mother’s body as well as two unharmed children.
The teenager, who reportedly has a history of mental illness, is currently being held on a first-degree murder charge.
WRAL notes that the suspect is believed to be an undocumented immigrant, but officials have reportedly indicated that if convicted he would likely remain imprisoned in the U.S.
