A touching vido has surfaced from Chicago, USA of a little boy hearing properly for the first time after an implant in his ear was switched on.

In the clilp, which was filmed at the University of Chicago last month, five-year-old ReShod sits with doctors and his mum waiting for the cochlear implant in his right ear to be activated.

When they finally switch the device on, a delighted ReShod keeps saying "I can hear! I can hear!" over and over again.

It was also the little boy's birthday so he got to hear a rendition of 'Happy Birthday' properly for the first time.

A cochlear implant is an electronic medical device that replaces the function of the damaged inner ear.

Unlike hearing aids, which make sounds louder, cochlear implants do the work of damaged parts of the inner ear (cochlea) to provide sound signals to the brain.
