by Jeff DonlanBritish scientists have finished moving their Antarctic research station away from the giant ice cracks that threatened their facility.Two ice fissures slowly approached the Halley VI Research station gave scientists reason to worry. When one reached less than 10 miles from the station, the British Antarctic Survey was forced to relocate. The scientists used tractors to pull the eight modules further inland, the largest of which weighed over 200 tons. The operation, which started last November, took 13 weeks to complete. The research station will be shut down until the start of the Antarctic summer season this November.
