CHONGQING, CHINA — A 14-year-old girl in south west China has died after an amusement park ride suddenly spun out of control and sent her flying. A 10-second video clip of the accident filmed by a bystander has since gone viral.

The horrific turn of events took place shortly after 2pm on February 3 at Zhaohua Park in Fengdu County. The cause of exactly went wrong on the ride, A Journey in Space, has yet to be determined. As it appears on video, multiple passengers were strapped in by safety harnesses. There may have been a malfunction with the girl’s harness, or maybe it wasn’t locked in properly, because somehow it came loose and left her hanging on for dear life. As the ride swung, she somehow managed to cling on to something for at least two full rotations. In the end, the force of the ride was too much for her, and she slipped off, slamming straight into a metal fence before collapsing to the ground.

Attempts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful, and the girl was pronounced dead at the hospital. An investigation into the tragic incident is currently underway.
