USC tops Penn State in high-scoring Rose Bowl

The University of Southern California and Penn State gave viewers an instant classic yesterday in the Rose Bowl as USC topped Penn State 52-49 on a last second field goal. Yesterday's edition of the Rose Bowl was the highest-scoring in the game's 103 year history, with both teams combining for 98 points and 1,040 yards of offense. USC freshman quarterback Sam Darnold threw for 453 yards and five touchdowns, another Rose Bowl record. His Penn State counterpart, Trace McSorley, tied the previous record with four. The game was tied with 34 seconds left when McSorley threw his third interception of the day. USC returned the pick to the Penn State 33-yard line. After moving the ball up a few yards, USC kicker Matt Boermeester knocked home the 46-yard field goal as time expired.
