Thailand's parliment invites crown prince to become new king

Parliament named Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn to become the new king after the death of his father King Bhumibol Adulyadej last month. Vajiralongkorn was to assume the throne the day his father died, but asked for time to mourn, according to Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha. The former king, who took the throne in 1946, died on Oct. 13 at age 88 after suffering many years of poor health. The 64-year-old Vajiralongkorn is not as revered as his father, with less interest in state affairs and politics.
