This game was supposed to be all about the return of a former Sporting hero, Cristiano Ronaldo. But instead of Ronaldo’s drama it so nearly turned into Fabio Coentrao’s comedy when the former Benfica full-back came on as a late sub and gifted Sporting a way back into the game with the daftest of handballs.
Coentrao has been one mistake after another since he was signed for 30m euros under Jose Mourinho in 2011. He has been caught smoking on his day off, caught dreaming on the job, and was even once sent to the stands by hysterical team-mates having mistakenly sat down alongside them on the bench thinking he had been named among the subs when he had in fact been left out.
