"Home Is the Sailor" by Jorge Amado was originally published in Portuguese as "Os velhos marinheiros ou o capitao de longo curso" meaning "The Old Sailors or The Long Haul Captain" in 1961.
It is a Brazilian modernist novel, translated into English by Harriet de Onis in 1964.
Jorge Amado was elected to the Brazilian Academy of Letters in 1961, the year of the publication of the novel. The story presents the Bahian society in the early 20th century. The story is set in a coastal town.
