En 1515, Le roi Manuel du Portugal décida d’offrir le rhinocéros au Pape.
Avec d’autres précieux cadeaux tels que de la vaisselle d’argent et des épices, le rhinocéros paré de velours vert décoré de fleurs embarqua pour un voyage du Tage à Rome.
On prêtait au pape l’intention d’organiser un combat du rhinocéros contre un éléphant, comme au temps des Césars.
La renommée du rhinocéros était telle que le roi de France, François I°, voulut voir l’animal. Lui qui s’était couvert de gloire à Marignan tenait à rencontrer la bête, la bête. Le rhinocéros dont l’armure naturelle et la prouesse contre l’éléphant constituaient à ses yeux un symbole de la chevalerie.
Cette rencontre eut lieu sur l'îlot d'If au large de Marseille.
