Plot Summary:
Set in the 1960s and stretching across the 1970s to the late 1980s, “The Last Applause” (Ep. 1-20) revolves around the lives of different 'getai' (stage) singers in Singapore who struggle to earn a decent living amid group infighting and backstabbing between themselves.
Love and romance, both reciprocated and unappreciated, between the lead characters would then have repercussions on their offsprings, some of whom would become leading 'getai' singers later on in the 1970s and 1980s (Ep 21-40).
A key theme across all 40 episodes is the exploration of the challenges faced by the local 'getai' industry as it struggles to cope with evolving changes in audience tastes amidst profound socio-economic developments across an entire generation.
