NASA recently tested its new Space Launch System booster in front of a crowd of thousands.

Unbeknownst to many, another important trial was going on the same time.

A revolutionary new camera was used to film the run to see if it could achieve an ever-elusive ideal exposure.

Called the High Dynamic Range Stereo X, the apparatus was developed to remedy the loss of detail that typically occurs when documenting bright blasts.

According to NASA, it solves the problem by recording, “…multiple, slow motion video exposures at once, combining them into a high dynamic range video that perfectly exposes all areas of the video image.”

Based on the crisp footage shared by the agency, the endeavor was a huge success.
