The Modern European City ISTANBUL http://bit.ly/modernistanbul

The modern city, which occupies a large area, lies to the north of the Golden Horn. It has fewer sights to offer the visitor than the old “Stambul” (today’s old city).

The Galata quarter , which was a Genoese settlement in the 13th century, lies to the south of Galata Tower, which also originates from that century. This old quarter forms a gigantic triangle with its corners comprising Galata Tower and the Ataturk and Galata Bridges. Today it is the quarter of whosale dealers, importers and old banks esta-blished in the last century.

The underground railway built in 1875 is the ol-dest one in all Europe, It is located in this quarter and connects the harbour section at Galata Bridge with Istiklal Street. Today an electric train operates between the two stations 620m apart from each other.
