MELISSA, TEXAS — A careless father of three has been charged with manslaughter after leaving his 6-month-old daughter in a car in 91-degree heat. When he found her four hours later, he tried to cool her down in the fridge before calling 9-1-1.

Michael Thedford, 33, dropped his two older children, a 5-year-old and a 3-year-old, off at daycare on June 20. An unemployed high school teacher, when he got back to his house, he forgot that his 6-month-old daughter was in the back seat. She’d stayed home that day with a virus and a mounting fever.

After waking up from a three to four-hour nap, Thedford remembered his baby had been sitting in the minivan, boiling. When he got to the child, she was burning up and unresponsive. He later told police she was “hot as a brick.”

In an attempt her down, he brought her inside and put her in the fridge, hoping she would be okay. He then tried to perform CPR to no success, and after an undisclosed amount of time he called both his wife and 9-1-1 to report his idiocy.

Michael Thedford was arrested and charged with manslaughter.
