LOS ANGELES — Star Trek star Anton Yelchin was killed Sunday morning after being crushed in a freak car accident.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, Yelchin’s vehicle was in neutral on a steep driveway when the accident happened at his San Fernando Valley home. He was reportedly on his way to meet friends when the car rolled backward and crushed Yelchin against a pillar and security fence. His friends later discovered his body when they went to check on him after he didn’t show up.

Police say they don’t suspect foul play in Yelchin’s death.

Many of Hollywood’s biggest stars paid tribute to Yelchin on social media, including Star Trek director JJ Abrams. In a heartfelt note, he wrote: “Anton - you were brilliant. You were kind. You were funny as hell, and supremely talented. And you weren’t here nearly long enough. Missing you, JJ.”

The 27-year-old was best known for his role as Russian math genius Pavel Chekov in the new Star Trek films.
