The triumph of death

  • 8 anni fa
The triumph of death and the macabre dances are a late medieval iconography, of the Franco-German origin, widespread in Europe until sec. XVI. This of Clusone, certainly one of the most 'important works of its kind in Europe, both from an aesthetic point of view, to the vibrancy of the colors and iconographic system, both from a historical point of view, because, dated 1485 (sec. XV), it is one of the most 'oldest known dances of death. The fresco is: the triumph of death on the powerful of the earth who vainly pleading to spare them (death, Queen, at the center of the composition, triumphs of popes, cardinals, emperors and nobles); the Dance of Death, with the skeletons that appear to mock the petitioners; the universal judgment with the distribution of souls between heaven and hell.
