It's not easy for humans to defend themselves against mosquito-borne viruses, but vaccines may be the best defense. In the 1900s yellow fever was the most feared virus caused by the serial biters. Then in the 1930s yellow fever subsided and was replaced by dengue. It continues to infect more than 400 million people a year. Thankfully, scientists may be on the brink of introducing a new vaccine to prevent dengue, and possibly Zika as well. Zika immunization testing could begin this fall, but it could take years for a vaccine to be approved.
