MESA, ARIZONA — A 23-year-old man was killed by a large swarm of bees while hiking in an Arizona mountain park on Thursday morning.

Alex Bestler and his friend Sonja were hiking in Usery Mountain Regional Park after 9 a.m. when a swarm of bees began attacking them, according to Azcentral.com.

Bestler, who had reportedly been visiting the area from Louisiana, was stung 1,000 times during the attack. Sonja escaped the bees, reportedly finding shelter in a nearby restroom.

After initial attempts by another hiker and park staff to help Bestler failed, firefighters worked to retrieve his body and send him to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
