While the finer details have yet to be announced, it seems strange that China’s 2nd largest gaming company, NetEase, is publishing Minecraft in the country. You see, Minecraft has been available in China for some time now at a price of RMB 165 (around USD 25), and there is a fear amongst the community NetEase will be jacking up the price. It is unknown if NetEase will create a local server.
Minecraft is pretty famous in China, with the sandbox title having more searches than League of Legends on some days. Private servers with no purchase needed are also rampant in China, and NetEase will most probably use its legal power to shut them down for good. Minecraft is currently being used as an educational tool in the Western countries, and perhaps NetEase could follow suit.
