After a Virginia judge's 2014 ruling stating police can force users to unlock their smartphones with their fingerprints, law enforcement officers in a Los Angeles identity theft case asked a suspect to do just that back in February The Fifth Amendment prevents the government from compelling someone to turn over a memorized PIN or passcode, but fingerprints, like other biometric indicators, have long been considered fair game, because they don’t reveal anything in your mind.
